Two area banks recently reported finding skimming devices on their ATMs. No skimming devices have been found on PEFCU ATMs.

Thieves place skimming devices over the card readers of ATM machines, so they can steal card information. They usually install a pinhole camera nearby to spy on people's PIN numbers. With this information, they can create copies of the cards and use them at ATMs or credit card machines anywhere.

West Lafayette Police Detective Troy Greene told WLFI-TV 18 reporters that people can protect themselves against skimming device fraud on ATMs and other self-service kiosks (like gas pumps) by following these tips:

  • Inspect the card reader for anything unusual before scanning your card (attached devices, tape, or glue are a few warning signs)
  • Cover the keypad from view as you enter your PIN
  • Constantly monitor your bank statements for activity that is not your own

If you suspect an ATM, gas pump or other self-service kiosk has been tampered or you find unusual charges on your card, contact your financial institution or local police department immediately.
